AMKE AMV Contest
Japanese Animation Association at UWM
Union box #155 University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee PO Box 413
Wisconsin, Milwaukee 53201

Rules:

  1. AMV means Anime Music Video, so the majority of your video should be Anime
  2. Each person entering the contest can submit up to 3 videos
    • Try to keep your videos under 6 minutes, AMVs which are too long aren't much fun for anyone
    • You'll need to fill out one submission form for each video you submit
  3. The contest viewing is open to people of all ages, so keep your submissions PG-13, 15+ or whatever other rating scale you prefer
    • AMVs with sexual nudity, tons of gore, or lots of profanity will not be accepted. If you have a question about whether a video is appropriate or not, send an email to amv@animemilwaukee.com
  4. No subs. If your AMV has subtitles (from using a fansub) in it, it will be disqualified
  5. If your video looks like a mess of blurry blocks or your audio sounds like someone singing into a tin can, it will be disqualified
  6. No bumpers, logos, credits (MTV style or otherwise), watermarks, website links or solicitations
  7. AMVs should be created within the past year. Older entries will most likely still be accepted
  8. If the video has previously won at AMKE or another contest, please don't enter it. If your video wins an award at another contest after the AMKE entry deadline we'll still show it and consider it for awards.

Categories:

Each video can be submitted to compete in one of the following categories. A brief example of traits a typical video in each category may have is in italic. Submit to whichever category your video suits the best.

  • Action    -Lots of motion, fast-paced cuts, fighting
  • Drama    -Slower-paced, heavy emotional atmosphere, suspenseful
  • Romance    -Slower-paced, focuses on character relationships
  • Comedy    -Parodies something in the world, uses sound bytes instead of music
  • Dance/Upbeat/Fun/Over the Top    -Fast, tons of eye candy, dance/techno music

If the contest staff feel a particular entry is better suited in another category it may be moved.

Drama and Romance may be combined if there aren't enough entries in one of those two categories

Submitting an AMV:

Online submission is preferred, but you can mail in a DVD or CD containing your entry if you wish.
All entrants must fill out the online form.

Speaking of which, here is the online AMV Contest form

Any media (CD(s), DVD(s), etc...) sent to the contest won't be sent back, so don't send us your only copy

DVDs should be regular data DVDs and not authored

Format:

Resolution: 720 x 480
Container: .avi, .mpg or .mp4
Codec: Huffyuv, Lagarith, DV, Xvid (.avi), x264 (.mp4)
Framerate: 29.97 or 23.976 with 3:2 pulldown
Audio: 48 KHz Stereo (.wav, .mp3 and .mp4/.m4a accepted)

.wmv will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Other containers will not be accepted.

It's best if your video meets these standards; however, if your video doesn't meet these standards the contest staff may attempt to convert your video. We can't make any guarantees that the sync and a/v quality will be unchanged though. If, after our conversion, the a/v quality becomes unacceptable your video will be disqualified. Also, keep in mind that any changes in sync will affect your score.

Judging:

The judging process is simple enough, each judge will "grade" each amv and the amv with the highest average score will win best of show. The amv with the highest average in each category will win the "best amv" for that category. scoring for each section is based on a 10 point scale (0 being bad, 10 being good)here are the scoring sections along with brief explanations:

  • Sync: How well do the various elements of your video line up with elements of your song?

  • Technical Merit: The harder your AMV looks like it was to make, the better.

  • Entertainment: If the video was engaging it will score high here. AMV's that aren't entertaining usually have you thinking, "is it done yet?" during the video

  • Flow: An AMV with good flow makes you feel like the scenes fit together, almost like it was taken right from the source.

  • Effort: If you work really hard on a project, even if it isn't the best, people can usually tell that you put a lot of effort into it...same thing applies here.
